It can be challenging to make new friends as an adult. Most adults from the outside looking in, seem to already have their friends, hobbies, careers, and habits. They don’t look like they have time for new friends. Perhaps rejection we have felt in the past allows us to feel scared and vulnerable to expose ourselves to others and put ourselves out there. Some of us are single, living alone, now working from home – no roommate or co-workers to socialise with. No longer getting on public transport or attending gym classes and struggling to make meaningful connections online. In a world of social media, it has become a lonely one for some. That’s why we love the idea behind Bubbles & Besties – a safe and fun environment for women to meet new people and make meaningful connections.

We are delighted to share Bubbles & Besties with our SHESeeks readers and Melissa describes how the concept came about and how you can attend one of her events.

Before we begin, I should probably introduce myself, I’m Melissa, owner of Bubbles & Besties. I’m 36 and from London (UK), I moved to Brisbane in March 2019. While I couldn’t be happier and I know it was definitely the right move for us, I do miss having a close group of girlfriends, it’s hard to make friends as an adult, which is where Bubbles & Besties came from.

Bubbles & Besties was created in October 2020 although it was an idea I’d been thinking about for a while. I was getting ready to launch it early 2020 when COVID reared its ugly head, and it became apparent that it was not the right time to launch a social events business. So, I pressed the pause button and decided I would revisit it later on.

As COVID seemed to be slowing down and restrictions were being lifted in Queensland, in October 2020 I decided to launch it. I’d started seeing so many posts in local Facebook groups from ladies who had moved somewhere new and were struggling to meet people and make friends. I could fully relate. As someone who has moved around quite a bit in the last 10 years, I’ve experienced first-hand just how hard it can be to make friends as an adult. Throw a global pandemic into the mix, and well it’s just near impossible. That was when I knew it was the right time, despite snap lockdowns every so often, restrictions on numbers, forbidden dancing and everything else we have to thank COVID for, in my mind it was a now or never situation, so I went for the now.

Bubbles & Besties is a business which organises social events for ladies aged 21 and over. The idea is to create a safe, non-judgemental environment for women to make friends. Whether you’re in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s or beyond, you’re more than welcome to attend. Each event is completely different and has a range of ladies attending from all walks of life, but what they do all have in common is they are all fun and you will meet some amazing, friendly, like-minded ladies at each and every one. If you’re wanting to meet some new people and make some friends, then come along to one of the events.
